We are happy to conduct the weddings of couples who live in Hawkhurst, or who have a strong connection with Hawkhurst – for example family.
Many weddings take place on a Saturday although we are able to offer other days if that would suit your situation. Many couples like to book their wedding well in advance but we can often do things on a tighter timescale if you are prepared to be a bit more flexible.
As well as a beautiful church we can offer the availability of an organist, the choir, and bells for your special day. Both traditional language and modern language services are used – it depends what is right for you. Don’t worry about al the choices – service, hymns, music – we can guide you through these.
In the situation where one or both of the partners has been married before, we may still be able to conduct your wedding. The Vicar will, however, want to have more of a chat with you before he agrees.
We also want to offer you the best start for this phase of your relationship so the Vicar will offer you the opportunity to attend informal meetings – usually after the 10am Sunday service, at which he will give you some food for thought about what marriage is about. It is also an opportunity to make sure that all the arrangements are on course for your big day.
If you would like to know more or would like to book a wedding, please either speak to the Vicar or come to the Church Office on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings 9.30 – 12.30.
Bereavement is a difficult time, of being parted from someone who has played a significant part in your life. It is also something we prefer not to think about, however, when you find yourself in such difficult times, we hope that, as a church, we will be able to help you.
The Vicar at St Laurence is happy to take funeral services for any families seeking Christian funerals for their loved ones. These can either be at the church, followed by committal at an appropriate local cemetery or crematorium, or else be a service conducted entirely at the crematorium.
Our Vicar works with all the funeral directors in the area, who will happily contact us if you think you would like a Christian funeral service.
If at times of difficulty you just wish to find a place of peace and calm, where you can pray or just “collect your thoughts”, then the church is open between 9am and 5pm. Please feel free to leave your prayer requests on the card by the candle stand and/or light a candle as a means of prayer.
We also hold a ‘Light up a Life’ service in December in conjunction with the ‘Hospice in the Weald’. This service is open to all who welcome the opportunity to remember their departed relatives and friends, and to light a candle as an act of remembrance or just to offer prayers.
If you would like to talk to the Vicar at any time about bereavement, please ring the vicarage on 01580 754459
